Did you know that globally, girls aged 5-14 spend 160 million more hours every day on unpaid care and domestic work than boys of the same age? That in low-income countries, 90% of girls and young women do not use the internet, because they lack access or are not allowed – while their male peers are twice as likely to be online?
This is just a snippet of why we have a Day of the Girl. Because the playing field globally is still so uneven. Because girls face deprivations in so many spheres of life compared to their male peers. Because it is systematic and embedded in social norms and behavior.
And, most importantly, because we can all play a part to shift the conversation, to change the outdated thinking, and let girls know, they are seen, they are valued and they deserve the same opportunities to realize their potential.
